Florida Electric Car HOV Incentives
There is one official Florida electric car incentive on the books. If you drive an EV, you can apply for an HOV decal from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. All you have to do is fill out the application, bring it to your tax collector’s office, and pay a $5 or $10 fee for either 1 or 2 years of use. Not only will you get free access to the HOV lane, but you’ll no longer have to pay for emissions tests, gas, or oil changes!
Florida Electric Vehicle Tax Credits and Incentives
Take a look at some of the Florida electric car rebates and Florida electric vehicle incentives for which you may be eligible. Highlights include:
- Buy your EV in Jacksonville, and you can expect a Florida electric car tax credit of either $500 or $1,000 (depending on battery size).
- Buy a used EV in Orlando, and you may be eligible for a long list of additional perks.
- Purchase a new plug-in electric vehicle that weighs less than 14,000 pounds, and you can forget about Florida EV tax credits because you’ll be eligible for a Federal electric car rebate of up to $7,500 dollars.
- Used EVs put into service after December 31, 2023, will be eligible for a tax credit of up to $4,000.
New Terms for the Federal Electric Car Rebate
As you’ve likely heard, the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act has renewed the Federal rebate for electric cars, bringing a new set of terms that work to support domestic automotive manufacturing and more. As you consider purchasing an EV, you’ll find that the stipulations disqualify over 70% of current EVs on the market for the full rebate. Fortunately, Subaru EV incentives remain the same. The Subaru Solterra qualifies for a full rebate of $7,500, and the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid qualifies for a $4,502 rebate. Take a moment to review the changes to the terms of the Federal electric car incentives below:
- The Federal electric car rebate has been extended through 2032.
- Used EVs put into service after Dec. 31, 2023, will be eligible for a $4,000 tax credit.
- While there was a previous cap of 200,000 EVs each year that were eligible for the rebate, the cap has been removed.
- In order for EVs to qualify for the Federal rebate for electric cars, they must be assembled in North America.
- Furthermore, 40% of the metals used in an EV battery must either come from North America or a country in that the U.S. has a free-trade agreement. This percentage will increase to 80% by 2027.
Types of Green Vehicles
Only EVs and hybrids qualify for the HOV decal, and only EVs qualify for the federal and Florida electric car rebates. That said, take a moment to learn about the different types of green vehicles below, so you can find out which vehicle types are eligible for certain incentives should you decide to do further research:
- EVs = Electric vehicles
- PHEVs = Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles
- ILEVs = Inherently low emissions vehicles
- HOVs = High-occupancy vehicles
- AFVs = Alternative fuel vehicles (EVs, PHEVs, biodiesel vehicles, fuel-cell vehicles)
