Subaru Key Fob Programming: Step-by-Step Guide

Wondering how to program your Subaru key fob? Bear in mind that modern key fobs must be programmed by your Subaru dealer (these are bulky and rectangular). However, if your key fob is from the previous generation and looks like a teardrop, you can program it yourself. To find out whether or not your Subaru key fob can be programmed from home, consult your owner's manual. Assuming you can program it, follow these steps:

  1. Open your key fob case to reveal the circuit board. You'll have two serial numbers, each of which features 8 digits. Write down the first series on a piece of paper to reference later on in the process.
  2. Then, climb into the driver's seat, close all the doors of your Subaru, and turn off your vehicle.
  3. Then, open the driver's door, hit the door button to unlock all of your doors, and close the driver's side door.
  4. Put your key in the ignition.
  5. Without starting your engine, turn the key so that your electrical systems turn on. Then turn them off. Do this ten times in quick succession.
  6. If you've performed the above steps correctly, you should hear the instrument panel chime after the tenth key turn.
  7. Quickly open and close the driver's side door again. The chime should repeat, and your dome lights should blink.
  8. After that flash from the dome lights, you'll have 45 seconds to program that 8-digit serial number you wrote down earlier into the engine's computer. To do this, use the lock/unlock button on the driver's side door.
  9. To input the first digit of the transmitter sequence with your lock button, press your lock button the number of times needed to match that number. Then, press the unlock button. You'll repeat this process for each number.
  10. When you're done, open and close the door, and then press lock or unlock on your key fob.
  11. Then, remove your key from the starter. You should hear another chime.
  12. Finally, open and close the driver door one more time, and wait five seconds. If you performed all of these steps correctly, you should have successfully programmed your key fob. If you're having trouble, don't hesitate to reach out to Subaru South Tampa for help!
